Reset one drawer at a time, and call it finished when three fabric boxes are full and the drawer closes without you pressing down on it. That is the rule. A drawer holds three named categories, no more, and the folded stack sits at least 1 in (2.5 cm) below the drawer's inside height so nothing snags on the frame above. In a standard wide dresser drawer, three IKEA SKUBB boxes at 7 3/4 x 15 x 4 3/4 in (19.7 x 38.1 x 12.1 cm) each, $7.99 for the set of three, span 23 1/4 in and leave the rest as working space. Everything that does not fit into those three boxes leaves the drawer today and gets a destination this week.
Why three categories and not five
A crowded drawer is rarely crowded with one thing. T-shirts, workout clothes, pajamas and the one sweater with no shelf are all competing for the same 28 inches, and every extra category adds a decision each time the drawer opens. The decisions are what break a drawer. Not the fabric.
Three is also the number the hardware gives you. The IKEA GULLABERG 6-drawer dresser is 66 1/8 x 18 7/8 x 39 3/8 in overall and costs $349.99, with each drawer measuring 28 in wide and 15 in deep inside. Three SKUBB boxes at 7 3/4 in wide occupy 23 1/4 in of that 28 in, leaving a 4 3/4 in strip along one side. Both GULLABERG and STORKLINTA drawers measure 15 in deep, exactly the SKUBB box depth, so the boxes sit flush against the back. Add a fourth box and you are 3 in over.
If your drawer is shallower than 5 in inside, SKUBB boxes will not close under the drawer above. Use flat trays instead. A Sterilite Medium Storage Tray is 7 x 4 7/8 x 2 1/2 in (17.8 x 12.4 x 6.4 cm), sold in sets of three, and four of them line up across a 28-inch drawer with 0 in to spare.
Three measurements, three categories, four piles
Open the drawer fully and measure three numbers: inside width, inside depth, and the clear height from the drawer floor to the underside of whatever sits above it. The third is the one people skip and the one that decides whether a divider works. Write all three down. A drawer whose front is 6 in tall may have only 4 1/2 in of clear opening once the runner and the frame are accounted for, and the checks in measure for a drawer organizer before buying are worth ten minutes before you spend money.
Then name the three categories the drawer will serve, and write those down too. "Everyday T-shirts, gym clothes, socks" is a workable set. "Tops" is not, because it smuggles in the sweater you will have to decide about anyway.
- Empty the drawer completely onto the bed. A half-emptied drawer re-crowds from the bottom up.
- Wipe the drawer floor and set the three boxes or trays in place, empty.
- Handle each garment once and put it in one of four piles: box 1, box 2, box 3, or leaves.
- When a box is full to 1 in below its rim, it is full. Anything in that category still on the bed joins the "leaves" pile.
- Put the boxes back and close the drawer. If it does not close freely, take one item out of the fullest box and try again.
Forty minutes is enough for one drawer, and the pile on the bed is what stops you opening a second one "just to compare." Whether a garment belongs in a drawer at all is a separate question, and fold or hang? make a garment-storage decision sheet covers the cases where a hanger is the better answer.

| Organizer | Size each | Set price | Fits a drawer with clear height of |
|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA SKUBB box, set of 3 | 7 3/4 x 15 x 4 3/4 in | $7.99 | 5 3/4 in or more |
| IKEA SKUBB box, set of 6 | 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 5 1/8 in, 11 x 5 1/2 x 5 1/8 in, 11 x 11 x 5 1/8 in (two of each) | $8.99 | 6 1/8 in or more |
| Sterilite Medium Storage Tray, set of 3 | 7 x 4 7/8 x 2 1/2 in | varies by retailer | 3 1/2 in or more |
Use the set of six when the drawer holds small items in mixed sizes — socks, underwear, belts — because its three footprints build a grid instead of three equal lanes. Folded shirts take the set of three. Use the trays when clear height is under 5 in.
Where the leftover pile goes
The "leaves" pile is the part that quietly undoes the reset. Sort it into exactly three destinations before you go to bed: another drawer with room today, the donation bag, and one labeled box for undecided items with the date written on the outside. Do not create a fourth destination. A garment that fits none of the three goes in the undecided box, and you open that box in three months.
Label the drawer front, or the boxes inside it, with the three category names. Whether the label reads "T-shirts" or "Mornings" depends on how the people in your house look for things, which is the point of choose closet labels that match how you search.
Keeping the reset from unwinding
The drawer re-crowds through laundry, not through shopping, so the test comes the first time you put a full load away. A clean garment with no box is a fourth category. It does not belong here. Move it out the same day rather than laying it on top. Once a month, look for the 1-inch gap at the top of each box; when the gap is gone, pull three items from that box and the drawer is reset again in under two minutes. If the gap disappears twice in a row, the drawer is carrying too many categories and one of them needs a different home.
